Roanoke woman ran Boston Marathon ahead of Blue Ridge Marathon

Posted: Updated:

Some wear their feelings on their sleeve, but Pam Rickard wears hers right over her heart. As she sports her Boston Marathon wind breaker. Luckily she crossed the finish line at 3 hours and 47 minutes, but that doesn't ease the pain of what happened.

"It was surreal because I was right there were it happened and it changed the whole atmosphere for me," says Rickard.

The last few days have been tough says Rickard. She has had a lot on her mind, hasn't slept much and says she has a heavy heart.

"I don't want to leave my family and I am feeling vulnerable but gratitude that I can't express," says Rickard.

In the midst of the chaos, Rickard found time to run three miles today; a mile for each of the victims. One of the last few runs she will do before hitting the pavement at the Blue Ridge Marathon this weekend. A race couldn't mean more.

"I am alive and healthy and others around us especially the victims of Boston they do not have a choice they don't get to, so the fact I get to, I don't look at it as I have to," says Rickard.

She won't be running for the best time. Instead she says it is for the people that aren't running this race.

"I do not believe runners were the target, if anything the supporters were where because of where the bombs were left.  That is who I am running for , the supporters, the volunteers, the family," says Rickard.

And thinking of the victims in any race she runs, whether it is in Boston or Roanoke, they will always be in her heart.
