NC legislators scrutinize Medicaid overhaul plan

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Pat McCrory's proposal to overhaul North Carolina's Medicaid system by shifting patient management to a few managed-care organizations is facing scrutiny from state health budget-writers.

Health and Human Services Secretary Aldona Wos and the state's Medicaid director presented more details Thursday to a legislative committee about McCrory's proposal designed to eliminate perpetual cost overruns.

Wos' agency would hire up to four companies that would assemble provider networks and come online starting in July 2015. The companies will receive a set amount of money per month for each Medicaid patient. They would get more for those with extensive health needs.

Former hospital president Rep. Donny Lambeth told Wos he's worried the plan will crowd out the current successful Medicaid nonprofit network called Community Care of North Carolina.
