Truck dangles from Va. bridge after accident

Posted: Updated:

A near fatal accident Thursday morning shut down a major Virginia interstate.

The crash happened on the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel near Newport News.

Witnesses say the driver of a semi-truck lost control of the vehicle just before 9 a.m., hitting the side of the bridge and causing the truck cab to catch fire as it dangled over the Elizabeth River.

Using multiple cranes and rescue equipment, emergency crews were able to pull the driver from the truck's dangling cab.

She was not hurt.

Traffic on the busy bridge, which links Newport News and Portsmouth, was shut down for hours as crews clear the scene of debris and diesel fuel that spilled onto the roadway.
