Injured bear cub brought to Raleigh

LAKE LURE, N.C. -

An injured bear cub that was found by hikers in Lake Lure has been taken to a rehab center in Raleigh.

Officials say a couple came across the bear in the middle of a trail off Boy Scout Camp Road and reported it to police, who then called wildlife officials.

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission says the tiny cub was injured by natural causes and was dehydrated when it was discovered.  They aren't sure what the cub was suffering from.

They also say that when a cub becomes injured, the mother will usually abandon it.  Usually, they say they will not remove an animal from its natural habitat unless they feel something is wrong.

NCWRC officials stress that the public should not pick up or touch any wild animals.

7 On Your Side's Emily Pace says authorities are not releasing the name of the rehab center in Raleigh in order to protect the cub.  It will stay there until it is healthy enough to be released into the wild.
