DURHAM, N.C. -

It's an honor most people only dream of -- being named to Time Magazine's list of most influential people.

For Dr. Kimberly Blackwell, 44, the reality is still setting in after she was named to Time magazine's list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

"I was quite surprised," she said. "It's still sinking in."

Blackwell is being honored for her work at the Duke Cancer Institute and her development of targeted treatments for breast cancer.

"Although we have stars and politicians, cancer effects millions of lives every day and to make a difference in the way we treat cancer patients is really important," she said.

Blackwell trained at the Mayo Medical School in Minnesota, did her residency at Duke and then a fellowship at Duke as well.

When Blackwell started her career, she never dreamed she'd come this far.

But, she said, "We still have a long way to go over the next 10 years."
