Roanoke man to run Blue Ridge Half Marathon backwards

Posted: Updated:

One local runner is facing this weekend's Blue Ridge Half Marathon a bit differently than the rest to raise awareness for a local charity.

Liewen Huang is running the race backwards.

He says this "fun challenge" is a way to raise awareness for Children's Miracle Network hospitals.

You may have seen him training on The Roanoke River Greenway.  He says he gets a few strange looks from those passing by and has learned to make light of it.

"People are also running sometimes I say forward is too easy," Huang said.

"I think him doing something not so ordinary, but for an extraordinary cause is very interesting.  I do think he's going to get a lot of looks and questions which is great and I appreciate him supporting our organization so much," explained Erin Hildreth, Children's Miracle Network, Executive Director.

Liewen has practiced running backwards leading up to this weekend's race, but even when he runs he wears glasses that have mirrors on the left and right to see what's behind him.
