St. Pete teen killed in car crash

Posted: Updated:
ST PETERSBURG -

Police say she only took her eyes off the road for a moment, but it was long enough to set off a deadly crash.

St. Petersburg Police say Friday evening, Christina Shiver, 16, was driving along the 1300 block of 40th Avenue Northeast when she became distracted.

Investigators say Shiver's vehicle veered to the right, jumped the curb and went up onto the sidewalk.  The vehicle then drove up onto the concrete barriers which separate the roadway and the sidewalk along a bridge.

Metal guardrails that line the north wall of the bridge pierced through the passenger's side windshield, killing Shiver's passenger, 16-year-old Alexia Douglas, upon impact.

Shiver was treated at All Children's Hospital for minor injuries and released.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
