Private security expert expects up tick in business at events

Posted: Updated:

Security was stepped up Saturday for the Blue Ridge Marathon in Roanoke in the wake of the bombings at the Boston Marathon.

The owner of a private security company in our area says it may not be long before you see additional protection out-sourced for many events.

I think it's going to become more like Israel and private security is going to be hand-in-hand with the sworn law enforcement protecting events of this nature," said Chris Ragone.

Ragone, owner of Executive Security Concepts, which employs around 20 officers has been privately protecting people for more than a decade.

"I do a lot of large events up in northern Virginia. I also protect a lot of diplomats, but some things that we are going to have to look into are more sporting events."

Ragone's team did not work the Blue Ridge Marathon, but a local sheriff agrees the presence of private security could soon increase at events like these. In fact, we spoke on Saturday to Roanoke Police, about their own extra eyes in the sky, and on the ground, during our local marathon.

"There wasn't any one particular entity or agency that brought that whole thing to fruition. Same thing goes for the marathon today. There were volunteer resources, citizen resources, governmental resources," said Tim Jones, Deputy Chief of Police.

"It's a very difficult target because you are talking about 26 miles but course there's going to be choke points. There's always going to be a more important area," said Ragone.

So as we learn more about what happened in Boston, one expert feels the need for private protection may increase across the country.
