Raleigh hosts 3-mile race to honor victims of Boston bombings

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Thousands all over the Triangle ran a 3-mile race in remembrance of the victims of the Boston bombings on Sunday.

Fourteen-year-old Nathan Gamble, his father and mother made Sunday's Memorial Race a family affair. "It's just what we do as a family," said Becky Gamble.

"We have to standup as a country, as a community and show that this thing won't deter us from the types of competition we do," said Eric Gamble.

Nathan, who is in 8th grade, was the first to finish the race.

It wasn't difficult to find people who knew someone in Boston or even ran the marathon.

"We were already at mile 26 and so we could see it," said Joel Stavas, a UNC physician and a marathon runner.

Stavas has run the Boston Marathon several times and said he needed to race to bring some closure to a painful week.

"I think for me as a marathon runner, we are in a recovery phase. We just have to settle back down, gather thoughts, become physically stronger, mentally more aware of what's happened and move on. Because the next time you run, you will be stronger."
