Buchanan Carnival ready for big rebound in 2013

Buchanan -

It's not an exaggeration to say the Buchanan 4th of July Carnival puts the small town on the map each summer.

This year, the 60th edition of the carnival may be the most important of all.

"We've always had a nice following of the carnival and this year I think it will be even more," said Buchanan Mayor Larry Hall. "Last year the storm that came through of course put a big dent into it."

That storm Hall is referring to is derecho which hit right at the beginning of the 2012 carnival, crippling the carnival both physically and financially.

On average the Buchanan Carnival brings in around $60,000.

But due to derecho last year, the carnival only made $18,000.

"We're going to patch up everything, get everything painted and I feel like it will give us a brand new look here," said Cleatus Newcomb, the first time chairman of the carnival.

Like Newcomb, Buchanan is in charge of the carnival for the time in 2013 after the volunteer fire department dissolved into the county.

The raffle tickets are already printed and will go on sale shortly.

Newcomb has been to all 59 carnivals hosted by Buchanan.

"I think Buchanan always proves itself just like with the flood of '85," he said. "They always come back bigger and better and I think this carnival will with our help and all. I'm just tickled to be part of it."

Now for Newcomb and Hall the real work begins as they work to make 60th Buchanan Carnival bigger and better than ever before.

The carnival runs June 27 to July 6.
