Carroll County police chase crash sends motorcycle rider to hospital

CARROLL COUNTY -

Virginia State Police are investigating a chase and crash that took place in Carroll County on Monday afternoon.

According to spokeswoman Corinne Geller, the Carroll County Sheriff's Office had set up a traffic checkpoint at the intersection of Snake Creek Road and Keno Road in the county.

At 1:37 p.m., investigators say a man riding a 2003 Kawasaki ZX6R motorcycle refused to stop at the checkpoint.  The sheriff's office says the rider sped past the deputy, nearly hit the deputy, stopped a bit further down the road, looked back at the deputy, then sped off.

A police chase began at what officers described as a "high rate of speed," and went eight miles down Snake Creek Road toward Hillsville.  Police say the rider then lost control while in a sharp curve, the motorcycle ran off the road, skidded 75 feet, and hit the front end of a Carroll County deputy's patrol cruiser.

Investigators tell us the motorcycle then burst into flames, and damaged the patrol cruiser.

EMTs airlifted the rider, identified as 38-year-old Brian E. Workman, of Hillsville, to Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem, North Carolina, with life-threatening injuries.

The deputy in the patrol cruiser was not seriously hurt.

Charges are pending.
