ROANOKE COUNTY, VA -

9:31 p.m.

Roanoke County Fire & Rescue spokeswoman Jennifer Sexton says investigators determined the fire was caused by a cigarette that was put in a flower pot on the back deck of the townhouse.

The plastic pot caught fire, and the flames spread to the vinyl siding on the townhome, then up to the eves, and into the attic.  The fire also caused damage to the townhome next door.

Sexton said investigators estimate damages at $150,000.

Six people have been displaced.  A dog and cat also escaped safely.
