NC immigration advocates to lobby at state capitol

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

North Carolina's immigration advocacy organizations are heading to Raleigh for a day of lobbying in the state legislature.

Leaders of more than 70 groups across the state are to meet Wednesday with legislators to press for initiatives such as in-state tuition and driving privileges for undocumented immigrants. Those leaders will also call on representatives of lawmakers to state their positions on immigration reform during a congress of all the assembled Latino organizations later in the day.

Republicans filed a bill this month that grants driving privileges to undocumented immigrants but adopts Arizona-style detainment measures and other enforcement tools. A Democratic bill would grant driving privileges but without many of the new enforcement provisions. Another Democratic bill extends in-state tuition at public colleges for those living in the country illegally.
