Mill Mountain Theater makes debut at Center in the Square

The newly revamped Center in the Square doesn't officially open until mid-May -- but the public won't have to wait until then to enjoy one of the main attractions inside.

Mill Mountain Theater's newest production will debut Wednesday Night on the Trinkle Main Stage inside Center in the Square.

The performing arts group moved back into the building in February, which gave them time to get everything set up and ready for their big premiere ahead of Center's grand opening.

They hope they can use people's curiosity in the building to their advantage and attract more people to their show.

"All of our patrons will get to see that sneak peek of the lobby and the atrium and get to see what's going on," said Ginger Poole, Producing and Managing Director for Mill Mountain Theater.

Poole says they can't express enough how excited they are to be back in Center in the Square.

The setup of the theater is the same as before -- but as part of the renovation, the flooring has been redone, the paint is fresh, and it's been equipped with new wiring, heating, and cooling, which Poole says will improve the theater experience. It's also significantly larger than the Waldron black box stage they'd been using during construction.

"We can do larger shows here," said Poole. "We can do our larger musicals here because we can accommodate a band behind us. So it's a different experience to have all of the pieces going along."

Outside the theater in the atrium, there's a brand new box office, digital signs and new wall displays, special flooring that looks like a pair of drama masks, and a brand new concession stand.

In this new and modern setting, it seems fitting that Mill Mountain Theater's first production would be an homage to the classics. Wednesday night at 7:30 they're starting a two and a half week run of a musical called "The Marvelous Wonderettes" which features the hits of the 1950s and 1960s.

It follows the lives of four girls who begin the show at their senior prom and finish it at their ten year high school reunion.

Tickets are still available and can be purchased online at the Mill Mountain Theater website or by calling their box office.
