Neighbor recalls Jamie Hahn's final words - WSLS 10 NBC in Roanoke/Lynchburg Va

Raleigh woman stabbed by best friend clung to life on neighbor's doorstep

RALEIGH, N.C. -

A neighbor of a north Raleigh couple who was brutally attacked in their home Monday evening says she could immediately see that the wife's life was in danger.

"My husband grabbed some towels and applied pressure to her wounds," said the neighbor, who asked not to be identified.

According to the 911 calls, a caller said "somebody stabbed her and she's bleeding so badly." The caller also said they had towels on her stomach and her feet up, but the caller later said she was fading.

Jamie Hahn, 29, and her husband Nation Hahn, 27, were attacked in their home on Tealwood Place Monday evening. Both were transported to WakeMed, where Nation Hahn was treated and released, and Jamie Hahn clung to her life until dying Wednesday morning.

Police have named Jonathan Broyhill, a man identified as the best man in the couple's wedding, as the suspect in the fatal stabbing.

The neighbor recalled Nation and Jamie Hahn running out of their home after the stabbing -- the two were screaming for help.

It was on her doorstep where Jamie Hahn collapsed from a heavy loss of blood.

"Nation was telling her that he loved her, and she responded back saying, 'I love you,'" the neighbor said.

He told her, "We will celebrate many more anniversaries together. And we are going back to the beach. We're going to go back to the beach."

He told her again, "I love you."

"Those were the last words she said," the neighbor said. "'I love you.'"

Those words were some of the last shared between Nation and Jamie Hahn. Jamie passed away just 36 hours after the couple's best friend stabbed her.

"Jaime lost her struggle to live this morning," the family said in statement released at 1:50 a.m. "We lost a beautiful and loving wife, daughter and friend. We all lost a pure and brave spirit."

Police have not released the motive for why Broyhill would have viciously attacked the couple with a knife. Police intend to charge him with murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

Broyhill will be charged and processed at the Wake County Jail when he is released from WakeMed. Broyhill is being treated for self-inflicted injuries.

The Hahns are considered up-and-comers in the Democratic Party. Along with Broyhill, all three are Democratic political strategists, and Jamie Hahn was a prominent fundraiser for the state party.

Some of the groups Nation Hahn worked with include the Coalition to Protect All N.C. Families, a campaign opposed to the state constitutional amendment that limits marriage to a union between a man and a woman. He has also worked with the N.C. Sierra Club, the United Football League and former U.S. Sen. John Edwards' presidential campaign.

Jamie Hahn founded Blue Sky Strategies, a fundraising firm that focuses on politics and nonprofits. She also worked on campaigns for several politicians, including Edwards, former U.S. Rep. Brad Miller and former U.S. Senate candidate Ken Lewis.

State Democratic Chairman Randolph Voller says he has worked closely with the Hahns and says the attack is devastating.

"She has worked with a number of Democrats through her firm -- fundraising. She truly believed in the Democratic values," Voller said. "Her husband has also been working for years putting out the message."

Broyhill was identified as a strategist for Jamie Hahn's firm when he made a campaign contribution to Walter Dalton's gubernatorial bid last September, according to campaign finance records posted on the State Board of Elections web site.

Voller, however, says he was not familiar with Broyhill or his work with Jamie and her firm.
