Miller: Hahn was looking into Broyhill's mgt of campaign funds

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

Former Democratic Congressman Brad Miller told WNCN Wednesday that Jamie Hahn planned to look into how Jonathan Broyhill handled funds from his recent political campaign. This, after questions were raised if Broyhill had misused money.

Broyhill was a close friend of Jamie and Nation Hahn. Broyhill is accused of stabbing the pair Monday evening; Jamie Hahn died Wednesday morning.

The Hahns and Broyhill were closely connected to the Democratic Party, and Miller had hired Jamie Hahn's firm, Blue Sky Strategies, to help his campaign. Broyhill, who grew up in Lenoir with Nation Hahn, worked for Blue Sky.

"There is reason to think he did use campaign money improperly," Miller said in a telephone interview. "Jamie Hahn was going to get all the campaign records from him and look at them herself."

Miller said "What Jon told us did not match up with other information."

Miller says the campaign's finance actions caught the attention of the FEC late last year.

WNCN uncovered FEC records that appear to show a small handful of Miller's donors got refunds in excess of what they donated.

But it's unclear if they actually got the money. Broyhill would have had access to those records.

Miller had represented parts of central North Carolina in Congress before deciding not to run in 2012.

A neighbor also told WNCN that Nation Hahn said there had been a financial dispute with Broyhill.

Miller said he spoke with Nation Hahn Tuesday night. He said Nation told him that he got home from work Monday and everything was fine.

Miller said Nation Hahn told him he went upstairs to change clothes.

"He said it was less than five minutes and he heard Jamie screaming," Miller said.

Raleigh Police have not commented on a motive, and Miller said they have not asked him about the campaign issues.
