New LOVEworks campaign hopes to boost tourism in Montgomery County

Posted: Updated:

You may have noticed some giant "love" artworks popping up in many different and unexpected places across Virginia, including some right here in our area.

Two of the newest "LOVEworks" have been created in the New River Valley.

The Virginia Tourism Corporation chose Downtown Blacksburg and the Christiansburg Aquatic Center to be the sites for the art.

"I think it's a good way to tap into the community," Blacksburg resident Phillip Bouiss says.

The idea is to use social media to connect with people across the state. The campaign is encouraging people to take pictures in front of the art and then post it to Facebook or Twitter using #LOVEVA.

"We are helping to extend that love is at the heart of every Virginia vacation." Lisa Bleakley, the Montgomery Regional Tourism Director says.

Bleakley hopes the LOVEworks will bring more people to the area.

She says the recent numbers show tourism in Montgomery County show revenue provided $121.8 million dollars in 2011. It also supporter1,200 jobs and $2.1 million dollars in local taxes 2011.

"We are really hoping, whether they are a resident or visitor, if they happen on a really cool thing, they want to share it with everybody and these days with our phones and we are able to instantly share anything," Bleakley says.

With a few shares and likes Montgomery County hopes to draw people in from near and far.
