Roanoke College removes 150-year-old tree

SALEM, VA -

Roanoke College is losing one of it's most historic staples.

A tree thought to be more than 150 years old, is scheduled to be removed later this week.

Lightning struck the tree and since then it has been considered a safety risk.

"We were all kind of stunned and had the same type of reaction. Wait a minute can't we squeeze some more life out of it? Or are you sure it's dead? It looks green to me, but sadly, we've all come to that acceptance at this point," Roanoke College History professor Mark Miller says.

Several attempts have been made to preserve the tree, It was named the 'Bittle Tree' after Roanoke College's founding president.
