Police release video in NC State sexual assault case

RALEIGH, N.C. -

N.C. State University Police released a video of a person of interest in the sexual assault that occurred near the Free Expression Tunnel Thursday morning.

The identity of the male in the video is not known. Police say the person in the video is not a suspect but is wanted for questioning.

The video was released after a student at N.C. State University was sexually assaulted after leaving the library early Thursday morning, stunning students on the west Raleigh campus.

The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 20 to 25 years old, approximately 5 feet 10 and was wearing a black shirt with white text and blue jeans.

According to campus police, a female student reported that she was approached by a man near the Free Expression Tunnel just after 4 a.m., and was then pushed into the bushes and sexually assaulted.

"I really feel safe on campus, so I was a little shocked when I got the message," said one N.C. State student, freshman Lauren Sobnosky.

Another freshman, Drew Davis, said the campus overall feels "pretty safe."

"We've got security officers all around," Davis said. The school has call boxes, 250 blue lights across campus and a system of security cameras.

Police say no weapons were used during the assault. The incident remains under investigation.

According to an N.C. State report on campus crime, there were five forcible sexual assaults in 2009, five in 2010 and seven in 2011.

But, Capt. Ian Kendrick of the NCSU Police said, "That's the one thing about sexual assaults -- traditionally in law enforcement, that is one of the crimes that we see that is very underreported for various reasons."

The Free Expression Tunnel on State's campus is not far from Reynolds Coliseum and is often painted by students.

Anyone with information about the assault is asked to call campus police at 919-515-3000.

N.C. State Police are reminding students to:

  • Never walk alone at night
  • Always choose well-lit pathways
  • Consider using the Safety Escort Program
  • Report any suspicious activity
  • Always be alert, and don't walk with headphones on.
