GIBSONTON, FL (WFLA) -

William Colome has resigned as the varsity baseball coach at East Bay High School after serving in that role for six years.

In a statement forwarded to the school principal yesterday, Colome said: "I resign today as the Head Coach for Baseball at East Bay HS because my life has taken a different direction."

Colome went on to say: "This decision is best for my family and the program, as well.  I appreciate the opportunity I was given and I am grateful for all the support I received from the community for the last 6 years."

Reached Thursday at home, Colome said the illness of a family member prompted his decision to leave the team so that he can be more supportive without the distraction of his coaching duties.

Colome said this was a disappointing season for the East Bay Indians which finished the season with a 4-19 record, but that had nothing to do with his departure.

He will remain on the East Bay faculty as a math teacher.

In a letter to parents, Colome said there will not be any summer baseball activities and suggested they seek other summer baseball programs until the school hires a replacement coach to run the team.

Colome said it was hard to break the news to his team yesterday.  "I got the impression they were pretty disappointed."

The parents of one player have been engaged in a dispute over his coaching practices, but Colome said his departure has nothing to do with that. He also said there is no basis for their complaints about him.

"When you have a losing season it's common for parents to be disappointed," said Colome.

No one in the school district or at the school could be reached for comment about Colome's departure or the future direction of the baseball coaching staff at East Bay High School.
