Veterans only job fair coming to Salem VA Medical Center

Posted: Updated:
SALEM, VA -

The 2nd annual veterans only job fair is coming to the Salem VA Medical Center Tuesday.

Charles Morris has a job but he's looking for a new one.

"There's always a chance to be better, there's always chance to be better" said Morris.

The Army veteran works in the kitchen at the Salem VA Medical Center. He'll be one of the hundreds of veterans expected at the second annual veteran only job fair.

"The job situation out here is really bad. it's hard for veterans, extremely hard for veterans because the employers are also aware of some of the problems that come along with being a veteran" said Morris.

"Sometimes when you come out of the military it's easy to find work and sometimes avenues might be more restricted" said Tim Woodrum is the chief of social work service at the Salem VA. "All of us have special skills so we want to utilize them. Some people's abilities are underutilized so this is a good way to match good quality employers with good quality veterans."

Morris is thankful thirty employers want to meet the military members.

"It makes me feel good. that's all we want as veterans is feel like we're wanted again, to feel like we're a part of something because in the past we haven't had that good of a reputation" said Morris.

The Salem Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, Virginia Employment Commission (VEC), Virginia Wounded Warrior Program, and Roanoke VA Regional Office are partnering to sponsor the job fair. The event will be held in the Salem VAMC Auditorium (Building 5) on Tuesday, April 30, 2013 from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm.

Thirty employers will be available to discuss job opportunities and offer assistance to Veterans in completing the application process. Staff will be on hand to assist with application submissions, resume preparation, and tips and tools to help Veterans get hired. Information on Veteran benefits and resources will be available.

"We realize many Veterans returning from military service are faced with challenges in finding gainful employment. We are very proud to be in partnership with VEC, Wounded Warrior Program, and many area employers who have expressed an interest in hiring and working with Veterans. Veterans bring a wide array of experience, skills, and training which make them ideal candidates for many positions," stated Dr. Miguel LaPuz, Salem VAMC Director.
