Lakeland's Common Ground Park to close for 3 weeks

This weekend marks your last chance to visit Common Ground Park on Edgewood Drive in Lakeland for a while.  City parks and recreation officials plan to close the park for three weeks in order to replace the playground surface which has not lived up to its warranty.

"The product has failed," explained Parks and Recreation Director Bob Donahay. "It's really not from overuse. St. Pete, Disney had the same problem. We're all replacing ours together."

Cones, caution tape, even barricades block areas of special concern where the artificial turf has split, worn and torn in places.

Parents like Roshni Stephen, who brings her boys two to three times a week to Common Ground, says a replacement surface will be welcome but a three week park closure -- not so much.

"It's going to be tough for the next three weeks," Stephen said.

Darrell Faison just brought his kids to the popular park for the first time.

"I mean the kids are going to be asking about it... but we'll definitely come back when it reopens," he said.

Common Ground Park will officially close April 29th.
