Cave Spring high school student continues to recover from fungal meningitis

Posted: Updated:

Cave Spring high school student, Zac Foutz, continues to recover after contracting fungal meningitis, his father said.

Ben Foutz said his son took a tainted shot at Insight Imaging in Roanoke back on September 18th of last year.

Foutz said Zac didn't want to miss a football game for Cave Spring high school.

He took the shot for back pain.

Health officials notified the family about the possibility of Zac getting sick on October 4th, Ben Foutz said.

Two days after intercepting three passes against Christiansburg in a River Ridge district game, Zac Foutz was in the emergency room as the onslaught of the infection set in.

Nine spinal taps later, Ben Foutz said his son is doing much better.

Zac plans to be back on the football field this fall.

"When he was sick we were just in crisis mode," Ben Foutz said.

The Foutz family has joined dozens of others in suing the New England Compounding Center, which made the shots, and Insight Imaging, which administered them.

"I don't think anybody intended to do this," Ben Foutz said.  "But it happened and it could've been prevented."
