Hokies Lose Opener to #5 Virginia

Posted: Updated:

The Hokies dropped game one of the Commonwealth Clash series by a 15-6 count. #5 UVA exploded for 17 hits and 15 runs to win the opener at English field. UVA moves to 38-6 on the season, 17-5 in the ACC.

The Hokies scored the first run of the game on a Mark Zagunis sac fly.  But Virginia sent 8 batters to the plate and scored four times in the second to take command. Nick Howard and Gagnani had consecutive RBI singles in the frame to give UVA a 2-1 lead. They would lead 4-1 after the inning, then blow the game open with a six run seventh inning to end all doubt. Game two of the series is set for 2pm Saturday.
