National Prescription Drug Take Back Day in the Bay area

TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

The Clearwater Police Department in conjunction with theDrug Enforcement Agency (DEA), other law enforcement agencies and partnering businesses is participating in National Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 27th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Sponsors say the event is an opportunity for citizens to safely discard unused or expired prescription medications, with no questions asked.

Citizens can stop by Westfield Countryside Mall (parking lot area south of Lifestyles Fitness Center, on the east side of theCountryside Mall) and drop off their prescription medications for safe collection and disposal. No bio-hazards or needles will be accepted and that the program is intended for private citizens of Pinellas County and not for commercial use.

"Providing a disposal option - that is both convenient and environmentally responsible - may help keep prescriptions out of the hands of people for whom they were not intended. This service is one step in helping prevent prescription drugs from falling into the wrong hands,"said Police Chief Anthony Holloway.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day addresses vital public safety and public health issue - the abuse of prescription drugs.Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet.

The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
