LEXINGTON, VA -

Traffic was still backed up around 3 miles at approximately 7:15 on Monday night.

VDOT plans to excavate the sinkhole overnight, then fill it in with large rocks.

The plan is to have two lanes open on that stretch of interstate by around lunch time on Tuesday.

1:44 p.m.

This sinkhole is in the same stretch of I-81, where another sinkhole formed in May of 2011.

According to VDOT construction manager George Bezold, the new sinkhole is about 1/2 a mile north of the 2011 sinkhole.

A sinkhole is causing major traffic delays on I-81.

According to Rockbridge County Emergency Services, the sinkhole is in-between Lexington and Fairfield, in the northbound truck climbing lane.

I-81 northbound is down to one lane in the area.

All passenger traffic is being detoured off I-81 at Exit 195 (northern Lexington exit), onto Route 11, and back on to I-81 at Exit 200 (Fairfield exit).

All tractor trailers will stay on I-81.

Work to fix the sinkhole is expect to go through Tuesday afternoon.
