Montgomery County looks at school budget increase

Posted: Updated:

There is only so much you can cut before nothing is left, and some parents in Montgomery County, like Connie Froggatt, say it is about time schools stop seeing cuts.

"I still think there are a few things to be restored, but I am happy to see a few things coming back for once," says Froggatt.

This year the $96 million budget is a $4 million increase from last year. Like Froggatt, Chairman Wendall Jones, is happy about what is in store next school year.

"We are actually adding things instead of cutting things, and that is credited to the board of supervisors stepping up to the plate and supporting education," says Jones.

This year the board of supervisors added a two-cent tax increase, which is expected to bring in $1.4 million to go towards future capital improvement projects, not just Blacksburg High School.

A 10-cent increase on personal property will bring in about $700,000 to help the overall school budget. Jones says it is a budget that impacts everyone.

"Our budget is for the county and school system and serves all county students and staff, it is not just for Blacksburg," says Jones.

So where will the money go?

School officials say they will add athletic directors which were cut last year. More money will go towards programs like school field trips, and more math textbooks will be added.

Teachers will also receive a two percent raise; the first one in five years.

Froggatt believes her money is well spent.

"I am very happy I understand the tax increases, I am prepared to pay them, it think they are important. Our community is determined by our education system," says Froggatt.

The U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for Arizona to carry out its third execution in the past year Wednesday following a closely watched First Amendment fight over the secrecy surrounding lethal injection drugs.
A condemned Arizona inmate gasped for more than an hour and a half during his execution Wednesday before he died in an episode sure to add to the scrutiny surrounding the death penalty in the U.S.
