School board wants community input on new superintendent

Posted: Updated:

The Pitt County Board of Education is asking parents and the community to weigh in on what they want to see in a new school leader.

Ever since former superintendent Dr. Beverly Emory accepted a new job back in March, the board has been on the hunt for a new superintendent.

The board has hired the North Carolina School Boards Association to assist with the process of hiring a new superintendent. It cost $14,500, not including expenses. The total cost is not to exceed $20,000.

So far they have collected input from about 960 staff members. They also collected about 300 responses from the community through online surveys.

Ultimately, it will be the board's decision to choose a new superintendent but they say they want to get as much community feedback as possible.

Board members say Chairman Mark Whichard is considering applying for the position so he as removed himself from the hiring process.

The school board is hosting two more public meetings:

The first is May 6th, from 5:00 – 6:30pm at C.M Eppes Middle School.

The second is May 20th, at 6:30pm at South Central High School.

Applications for superintendent are due by May 20th. The board hopes to have a new superintendent by July 16th.

You can also give your input online through the Pitt County Schools website.
