Bedford County pushes for school resource officers

It would take more than two hands for Bedford County Sheriff Mike Brown to count the number of reasons why a school resource officer is needed in every school in Bedford County. 

"We need to protect and I don't think we are doing enough," says Sheriff Brown. 

He is pushing to bring in 15 additional officers to fill every school; a total cost of $1.7 million. Brown requested $850,000 from the board of supervisors. 

"That is a lot of money but what price do you put on a six year old or a seven year old?," says Sheriff Brown. 

Curry Martin with the board says there is a reason that money isn't in the budget. 

"The money was the main thing with the amount that was asked for $850,000, wasn't going to happen," says Martin. 

This year the general assembly put an additional one million dollars for an SRO grant program, bringing the total to $1.7 million. A locality can get up to $50,000 for an officer for one year, with a cap of four years.    

Brown says other places are applying for the grant, making it extremely competitive for places with some officers already; the case for many departments in our area.

"We are going to try, but even if we get it, I don't think it will be more than one for us, and my feeling we probably will not," says Sheriff Brown. 

Martin agrees they need to look at options, but this grant may not be the best fit because the money runs out after a few years.
