Tim Kaine's visit to Roanoke likely to focus on fairness

ROANOKE -

Virginia Senator Tim Kaine (D) will be making his way to Roanoke Wednesday to sit down with local business leaders.

Several topics are on the agenda including Roanoke's revitalization and the importance of keeping the Roanoke mail processing center open.

But fairness is likely to be a buzz word among business owners.

The Marketplace Fairness Act is being debated in the U.S. Senate and according to Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce President Joyce Waugh, the bill has plenty of local support.

The bill would add state sales tax to online purchases, which could help local brick and mortar businesses nationwide.

Waugh said hosting Kaine in the Star City provides a unique opportunity.

"When you have them sort of on your home turf if you will, it makes it much easier because in a sense they can see and sense more what's going on and why it's important to you," she said.

Kaine will also tour downtown Roanoke with Mayor David Bowers during his visit.
