NC State on alert after on campus assaults

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

N.C. State students are on alert after two separate assaults occurred on campus in the past week.

Police say a female student was approached by a male subject Tuesday night near Daniels Hall. The suspect put his arm around the victim. She pepper sprayed the suspect, ran away and called police.

On Thursday, a female student reported that she was approached by a man near the Free Expression Tunnel just after 4 a.m. and was sexually assaulted.

N.C. State police say the two assaults are not connected but urge students to be on guard.

"It's always cause for alarm when crimes are happening on campus," Chris Toemes said.

"If I walk alone or have to go somewhere I have to take a friend or something," said Mary Catherine Preddy.

"As far as what that individuals intentions are – they're unknown. But this is a matter we take extremely seriously," N.C. State University Police Chief Jack Moorman said. "We want to do whatever we can to ensure the safety of our students."

N.C. State police have a vague description of one suspect from a security camera and are still investigating the assaults.

Police are reminding students to:

  • Walk in well lighted areas
  • Walk in groups whenever possible, especially at night
  • Consider utilizing public transportation or the Safety Escort at 919-515-3000
  • Report suspicious activities or crimes on campus by calling
