Roanoke event helping people become homeowners

ROANOKE -

The Roanoke Regional Housing Coalition is working with the community to make the ultimate transition, getting people to go from homeless to homeowner.

Thursday the coalition is hosting a housing symposium with more than 100 business and community leaders throughout Southwest Virginia.

The goal is to give everyone a greater understanding of the challenges in the housing market and find the best way to get more people to reach the goal of home ownership.

"So much has changed. So many organizations are faced with new challenges and it's really about working together and that is what we have found," said Roanoke Regional Housing Coalition Chairperson Nicole Pendleton. "The innovation is so key, and the partnerships and collaboration."

The event will also feature motivational speaker Rene Godefroy, a Haitian immigrant who came to this country with only a few dollars but still achieved the American Dream.

The symposium runs today from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Tanglewood Holiday Inn in Roanoke.
