Ground turkey study found bacteria in product

Posted: Updated:

Consumer reports analysis on ground turkey bought at retail stores nation-wide revealed that half of the samples contained dangerous fecal bacteria including E Coli., NBC News reported.

Nearly 90% of the product contained potentially dangerous bacteria, and almost all the bacteria found were resistant to common antibiotics, according to the NBC reports.

Farmers give animals antibiotics to keep them healthy.

Turkey industry representatives criticized the study, its findings and its small sample size. They assured the ground turkey was safe, NBC reported.

Meanwhile, to ensure safety, remember to cook turkey within a few days after buying it and wash your hands and countertops.

Another alternative is buying organic, or no-antibiotic poultry.
