Kenyan runner to host Roanoke running clinic

RADFORD, VA -

If you want to move from the couch or the tread mill you're on right now to a running outdoors, you can learn from some of the best this weekend.

Train with Kenyans is a running clinic taking place in Roanoke. As the name suggests, Kenyan runners-- known for their speed-- will run it.

To say David Cheromei is fast is an understatement. The Kenyan, now living in Virginia, can run a mile under four minutes. He says, "I had a lot of people ask me why are Kenyans so fast?"

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletes champion and Olympic qualifier will share his secrets at a one day running clinic in Roanoke Saturday at Fit Studio 365. Cheromei says they'll discuss everything from "how do they eat, how do they train, what exactly because it's not magic."

By his side is Daniel Komen who still holds world records for two mile and 3,000 meter runs. "I run fast through a lot of training and a lot of commitment," Komen said.

No longer a serious competitor, Komen is now committed to helping children through Cheromei's Grace of God children's project which helps orphans in their native Kenya with education, ministry and basic needs. "We feel like we belong here," Cheromei said. "To be able to pass it on to other people feels really good."

Cheromei offers week long training but is offering the one day clinic Saturday, May 4 at 10 a.m. at Fit Studio 365. The cost is $20 for adults, $10 for children under 12. All the proceeds will go to Grace of God. Click here to register.

The focus will be on improved running technique to help you run faster, longer, and safer, the running methods of Kenyans, training schedules to fit any schedule, advice on how to avoid injury and proper nutrition. Physical Therapists and Occupational Therapists will also be available to evaluate gait pattern that can assist you with finding a proper fitting shoe.
