BOTETOURT COUNTY, VA -

Appalachian Power (APCo) formally filed a request with the state today (Thursday), for a project to add a new substation, and improve power flow at a current Botetourt County substation.

The Cloverdale Extra High Voltage (EHV) Transmissions Improvement project would cost $237 million APCo estimates.

Thursday's filing is the start of the state-level review process for the State Corporation Commission.

APCo wants to build a new EHV substation near the current one in Cloverdale, on property that the electric company already owns.  APCo says it also plans to expand and upgrade equipment at the existing substation, and add new transmission lines to link the facilities.

The project is needed to deal with voltage and heat problems, transmission congestion, and outdated equipment APCo says.  According to the company, the old equipment was identified by PJM, an independent transmission system operator.

Appalachian Power set up this section on its website for information about the project: https://www.appalachianpower.com/info/projects/MajorPowerLines/Cloverdaleproject/Default.aspx
