Craven County politician may challenge Rep. Walter Jones

Posted: Updated:

A local politician is considering a run for Congress.

Scott Dacey, chairman of the Craven County Board of Commissioners, says he's considering running against longtime Congressman Walter B. Jones in the next election.

He wants to represent the Republican ticket in the third congressional district. Dacey says he believes Jones has not been an effective or reliable leader.

"I believe that we're at a critical time in the future of this nation, we've got to get our arms around the budget problems, and I believe I could bring an effective voice to that debate while serving in Congress," said Dacey.

But Jones says the fact that he has been re-elected eight times proves he has the public's support.

"I don't respond to what challengers say. I don't, even after you file. But certainly before you file," said Rep. Jones.

Dacey says he wants to visit all counties in the third congressional district before making up his mind whether to run for Congress.

The general election is November 4, 2014.
