Round Hill Elementary won't get new cafeteria until next year

ROANOKE, VA -

Roanoke City Schools Superintendent, Dr. Rita Bishop, said Round Hill Elementary School won't get it's new cafeteria until the summer of 2015.

The school combined with the old Huff Lane Primary School a few years ago, given that consolidation, plus a significant population in growth, Bishop said the school is now overcrowded.

The school system had a three year plan to relieve that overcrowding, with work set to start this summer.

The school district will use proceeds from the sale of Huff Lane to a private development group.

However, Bishop said the bids to find a general contractor to handle the project have come in much higher than expected, which forced her to cut the cafeteria from this summer's renovations.

The school will still get its new gymnasium as promised, Bishop said.

Right now the school uses a modular classroom as a gym.

Bishop said they'll also do some prep work to get the cafeteria ready for improvement, but that'll be it for this summer.

Phase 2 of the project is scheduled to take place during the summer of 2015, Bishop said.

Now the cafeteria will be part of that phase.
