Junior League awards grants to improve women and children's lives

The Junior League is making a difference for women and children in the community giving away thousands of dollars in grants.

Amy Foster, President of the Junior League says, the league chose to give Children's Trust $20,000 to hire a forensic interviewer to help respond to local child abuse and CHIP of Roanoke Valley $10,000 to pay for nutrition, exercise and cooking materials to help decrease childhood obesity numbers.

"We do have the opportunity to change lives and I think that that is something the Junior League feels is important.  We certainly want to make a difference in the lives of people that we serve," said Foster.

We caught up with leaders from Children's Trust about how the junior league is making a difference for area children.

Right now, the forensic interviewer on staff is overwhelmed.

It's a growth credited to people being more aware of the issue of child abuse and neglect.

"Over time we're more likely to talk about abuse of children.  It's not in the shadows like it used to be.  We're bringing it to the fore and we're willing to call it what it is now and speak up for children and I think that's really important," said Janice Dinkins-Davidson, Children's Trust Executive Director.

That kind of difference made falls right in line with the Junior Leagues mission to improve the lives of area women and children.
