ROANOKE -

5th graders at North Cross School fought like gladiators Friday.

The annual battle re-enacts history with wooden swords and shields.

This year, they reenacted the famous fight between gladiators Spartacus and Crixus, leaders of the slave rebellion in the Third Servile War from 73-71 B.C.

"We have a lot of fun getting ready for it. I hope it will provide a memory for when they're older. They can remember they fought as a gladiator when they were in the fifth grade" said Victor Lamas, a 5th grade teacher.

"It was really fun, all the flipping and fighting. It was really fun" said Grey Pearson, the 5th grader who played Spartacus.

Parents also dressed in togas to cheer them on.
