Twenty one hundred employees use machines and a personal touch to put Volvo trucks together piece by piece. At the Dublin plant, the focus is on the customer. Clients are invited to visit the plant to see their trucks being made and talk to the people who make it happen.

Volvo Vice President and General Manager, Lars Blomberg came to the New River Valley from Sweden two years ago and says, "We are very positive about the future. We see a lot of possibilities in the future."

He is talking about a future that includes using some Volvo employees who have excavating experience and want to be a part of building a test track in this field next to the plant.

He explains, "We have a similar thing in Sweden the customer can test ride our products and it has been very successful."

Every eight minutes a new truck rolls off the line and is started for the first time. Every truck sold in North America is made at the New River Valley plant.

One aspect of Volvo trucks that is unique is the I-Shift system which is a manual shift system that works automatically.

Blomberg says, "It's one thing to talk about it, but another thing to really experience this gear box inside the vehicle."

By this fall, leaders hope the empty field next to the plant will provide an even better way showcase what employees do every day to keep the line moving and the trucks running.


Volvo's New River Valley assembly plant in Dublin announced that it will begin construction of a Customer Experience Track to showcase Volvo VHD vocational trucks during customer tours and other events.

The dirt and gravel track will be about one mile long and offer customers the opportunity to experience the VHD trucks in a real-world environment. Volvo believes the Customer Experience Track will help support its commercial focus on expanding its presence in the vocational segment of the heavy-duty market.

According to Lars Blomberg with Volvo Trucks North America, part of the customer focus at Volvo is that clients can come in and see their trucks being made on the assembly a line and interact with workers. They think this new customer experience track will help further that customer service and create growth.

Volvo is offering current employees the chance to help construct the track, and they are using Volvo equipment to make the track on Volvo land.

I test drove one of their trucks that uses their I-shift system. It's a manual gear box that shifts automatically.
