Group of moms renews push for background checks

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. -

Some survivors of gun violence in North Carolina are demanding Senator Richard Burr change his mind on background checks.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns got together Friday with gun violence survivors in Durham.  Recently, a Senate background check bill failed to meet a 60-vote threshold to block a filibuster threat.  Senator Burr voted against it.

A sponsor of that bill, Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, vows to bring it back for another vote.

Yolanda Bagley is one of the women in support of universal background checks.  Bagley's 24-year-old son was shot and killed by a man, police say, had once been described as his friend.

"And...I can't understand how a Senator could...turn that down (background checks) because it could happen to someone he loves, like I love my son," Bagley said.

Senator Burr's office says, while he sympathizes with violence victims, he's always upheld second amendment rights and his vote shouldn't have come to as a surprise to anyone.
