Hundreds of firefighters converged on Raleigh Saturday to remember colleagues from this state who died in the line of duty.

The 8th annual fallen firefighter's parade wound its way through the downtown, ending up at the firefighter's memorial in Nash Square.

The ceremonies this year focused on 13 firefighters who died in the line of duty; but the participants were there to honor the memory of all firefighters who died in this state.

"Firefighting is a brotherhood; it's like family," said Cynthia Blackmore who is the daughter of a firefighter as well as married to a firefighter. "It's like losing a part of your family; so it's very important we remember those who have fallen for us."

As walking firefighters from around the state escorted slow moving fire trucks accompanied by the mournful sound of bagpipes, they honored the memory of every firefighter who rode a truck to the scene of an emergency and didn't come back.

"Everyone sees fire trucks going down the road, and all the kids' wave," said Mike Greenham of the Durham Highway volunteer Fire Department.

"It's always a grand thing for the public to see the fire department, but this is the reality," he said referring to the fallen firefighter's memorial next to him.

"Most of us do it from the heart; it's not about the money. It's about helping our communities," said firefighter Joey Webb who is the association's current president.

Among those honored Saturday were four members of the North Carolina Air National Guard who died last year when their C-130 air tanker crashed while fighting a forest fire in South Dakota.
