Roanoke Strawberry Festival has extra security

Posted: Updated:

Thousands of people headed downtown to his year's Strawberry Festival for strawberry treats--- chocolate covered strawberries, strawberry shortcake and slushes.

The two day festival wrapped up Saturday afternoon without a hitch but extra security was on hand for the event.

Local police, fire, and EMS crews along with Executive Security Concepts, a local private security company, helped staff the event.

The company normally assists law enforcement but this year, three officers helped check trash cans and  looked for unattended bags.

"You think oh, this is only Roanoke, Virginia. No one's going to do anything to us but you never know. You could have copycats, you could have someone who has been radicalized. It could be in any city and they see this on the news and they think 'wow, if he could do that, I could do that right here in Roanoke' so I take it serious" said Chris Ragone with Executive Security Concepts.

One member of security helped guard the festival overnight Friday.
