ROANOKE -

From age two to eighteen these kids are learning to eat healthy and stay active. It is part of the first-ever "Blue Ridge Kid's 1-Mile Color Fun Run" and volunteers covered more than 250 runners in corn starch before they pounded the pavement at Valley View Mall this morning.

"If you start as a young kid you are more than likely to keep active throughout your whole life," said Caitlin Privette.

Runners tried their hand at shooting hoops before their colorful welcome at the starting line. Organizers say one of the reasons behind the event is to curb the growing problem of childhood obesity.

"The schools are really being forced into pushing the kids academically for S.O.L.'s and things like that, and things like recreation, and health, and fitness and all that has kind of like taken a back seat to that right now. I think it's got to be a true combination of education, and body awareness and health and I think they go together," said Doug Fonder.

One of the sponsors for today's event, Funomenal Sports, actually is expanding in the Roanoke Valley to get kids active as early as two years old. They hope their message, along with teaching healthy eating habits will keep kids in shape.

"Win or lose, move, be active, be motivated," said Brooke Holterman, with Funomenal Sports.

A stance event sponsors and organizers hope these kids will spread throughout their communities.
