Floyd Co hiring first tourism director

FLOYD COUNTY, VA -

There were few visitors in Floyd on this very rainy day, but on Fridays, this place is flourishing.

"Friday we're almost to its critical mass. It's kind of hard to fit anything else in town on a Friday night," said Case Clinger, a member of the county's Board of Supervisors.

County leaders are searching for a tourism director, in an effort to make a splash after success from events like FloydFest, and growth from the county's largest employer, Chateau Morrisette.

"We're hoping that they'll look at some of the other things that haven't been discovered such as rafting on the Little River, things like that. Maybe hiking on Buffalo Mountain, more bike trails. Anything we can do to market people coming to Floyd," said Clinger.

The winery seated just off the Blue Ridge Parkway recently shipped 1,150 bottles of Merlot to China to help lure interest from overseas.

"In this past year we've entertained people from France, people from Australia, and China. First we have to make sure we are strategically growing our business. When we are growing our business, we're increasing the number of people we can employ here in Floyd County," said George Weldon, General Manager.

It is a strategy which could aid both one of the commonwealths' highest unemployment rates, while generating revenue.

"Some of the other things we are doing here around the property is adding hiking trails. Once a month we have horseback riding here. So it's all about getting more and more people up here," said Weldon.

Leaders and business owners hope Floyd County is soon a place in Virginia they can flaunt
