96-year-old Botetourt County woman named a Mother of May

Posted: Updated:

Monday marks the first of a number of outstanding mothers we plan to highlight for our Mothers of May contest.

Our first mother is 96-year-old Lucille Graybill and her love for music made a difference not just for her family, but in her community as well.

We talked to Lucille and her daughter, Anne, about a life-long dedication to education and helping kids learn to love music.

A neurological problem makes Lucille sound feebler than she really is.

She says her father once had a saying about music.

"They are expressions of all of life's experiences good and bad and it is a source of comfort to me," said Lucille.

"Truly I don't know what she'd do if she did have her music, because she's never alone when she's got her own music to play," said Anne Vassar, Lucille's daughter.

Lucille plays for church every week, funerals, weddings and special occasions and has also spent decades of her life educating kids in Botetourt County Public Schools.
