Radford woman named Mother of May finalist for leading fight against breast cancer

Posted: Updated:
RADFORD, VA -

Tuesday's Mothers of May nominee has not only set a great example for her kids, but she's demonstrated tremendous strength as a breast cancer survivor.

We talked to Cathy Pinkley about nominating her mother Betty Shideler for her mission to make a difference in the lives of those impacted by cancer showing them they aren't alone in their efforts to beat the disease.

Shideler started by walking in the first Susan G. Komen race in Roanoke back in 2010.

Since then, she's joined the survivors committee working in a number of projects and raising awareness for self-examinations.

"I won't stop until I'm not able to or until they find a cure. I mean it would be wonderful if they do it in my lifetime, so I don't have to worry about my little girls," Shideler.

The grand prize winner for our Mother's of May contest gets a makeover with the works donated by Zee's Salon.

The makeover includes the winning mother's choice of hair color, style, a manicure, pedicure and whatever else the lucky woman thinks she needs.

We want to remind you that voting is now open.
