Juror Roundup: You really can find anything at Wal-Mart

Posted: Updated:

You can find anything at Wal-Mart.
So when a judge needed a handful of jurors to serve during a criminal trial, that's exactly where the sheriff's office bailiffs headed.
It happened in Beaufort County.

Last week, a superior court judge needed some jurors and he needed them fast. So naturally, he turned to the busiest place in town, Wal-Mart.

That's where they rounded up the four jurors and one alternate needed to serve on the jury of a breaking and entering case.
Deputies say when two trials overlapped, the court ran out of jurors needed to fill the 13 jury spots. So Superior Court Judge Russell Duke ordered the bailiffs to find qualified jurors to serve.

They went to several public places, but settled on Wal-Mart because of its diverse crowd.

Beth Byrd was on a routine shopping trip when they stopped her.

"It was all very surreal that that could happened," said Beth Byrd, who was summoned for jury duty. "I never realized that you could be summoned like that. Before I knew it, I couldn't back out of it because I met all the requirements to be a juror, so, (laughs), so I had to serve."

Deputies say this type of juror round-up rarely happens and they try to avoid it because it's such an inconvenience for people.
