RECALL: BMW due to air bag problems.

Posted: Updated:

The German automaker BMW recalled over 42,000 sedans, coupes, wagons and convertibles due to possible air-bag problems, according to the website safecar.gov

The vehicles recalled are model year 2002-2003 325i, 325xi, 330i, 330xi sedans; 325Ci and 330Ci coupes and convertibles; 325iT and 325xiT Sports Wagons; and M3 coupes and convertibles.

The reason for the recall as a safety defect in the passenger side frontal air bag which could produce too much pressure in the inflator.

The inflator could blow up upon the air bag's deployment and small metal fragments might injure the passengers.

The company plans to notify the owners of the affected cars in May. According to BMW, the replacement parts will be available in July. The car owners can then schedule an appointment to replace the airbags free of charge at the dealership.

Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or email BMW at CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com.
