The City of Roanoke and Roanoke Art Mural Project (RAMP) announce that a ceremony was held on May 8, at the Garden City Recreation Center to dedicate a new mural. The project was funded by an Arts and Cultural Plan Implementation Mini Grant provided by the city and the Foundation for Roanoke Valley.

Mim Young, who founded RAMP and initiated its involvement in this project, worked with the Garden City Civic League, the Roanoke Arts Commission, and youth apprentices from Roanoke Destiny and a Junior Achievement of Southwest Virginia program participant. Following input from a community meeting, Roanoke artist Toobz designed the mural.  Roanoke Destiny youth group members submitted concepts for the stair riser design, and Toobz, Mrs. Young, and five students participated in the installation.  This is the first time exterior steps to a public building have been painted in the Roanoke Valley.

Mim Young states, "The City of Roanoke wanted to do a special project for this neighborhood, and the residents' participation in meetings and positive feedback before, during, and after the project has meant so much. While the mural and stairs we painted have added vibrancy to this building, it pales in comparison to what spending time in Garden City has brought to my understanding of this part of our city. We didn't want this art mural to change their community; we wanted it to amplify what they already love about it. Their pride of community is well placed."

The Garden City Recreation Center was originally built as a school in 1917. At the time the Garden City area was a part of Roanoke County but in 1949 Garden City Center became the property of the City of Roanoke.

"It's great to see the partnerships that have made this project a success," says City Council member Anita Price. "The Roanoke Arts Commission is to be commended on its continued efforts to offer local groups the opportunity to participate in enhancing our community through public art."
